About the event
In a world shadowed by political repression, composers Dmitri Shostakovich and Heitor Villa-Lobos found ways to assert their artistic voices with quiet strength. Shostakovich’s Fifth and Sixth String Quartets reveal an ongoing struggle to express profound emotion and resistance beneath the watchful eyes of Soviet censorship. His music balances the weight of oppression with moments of hope, complexity, and coded defiance.
Across continents, Heitor Villa-Lobos faced the constraints of Brazil’s authoritarian regimes. His String Quartet No. 17, composed during a period of tightening control over artistic expression, reflects a resilient spirit rooted in cultural identity and personal truth. Villa-Lobos’s music embraces both Brazilian tradition and universal humanity, standing firm even when silenced.
This program, Quiet Strength, celebrates the subtle power of music to endure, resist, and speak when words cannot.
Free wine to be served before, during, and after the performance.
