In Inner Fortress, Axiom Quartet performs three of Dmitri Shostakovich’s most intimate and psychologically complex string quartets, each composed during a time of personal or political crisis. These works, Quartets Nos. 7, 8, and 9, form a powerful triptych that explores grief, memory, and the fragile, often hidden fortresses we build to protect the self.
Written in 1960 following the death of his first wife, Quartet No. 7 is Shostakovich’s shortest and most compressed quartet, yet it contains an astonishing depth of emotion. Its brevity speaks volumes, as if the composer could say no more than what the music insists on expressing.
Quartet No. 8, perhaps Shostakovich’s most well-known chamber work, was written a few short months after the 7th quartet. Dedicated “to the victims of fascism and war,” the piece is equally a musical autobiography, weaving…
