Axiom Quartet explores the enduring strength of the human spirit through three profoundly expressive works: Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartets Nos. 10 and 11, paired with the deeply emotional third movement of George Rochberg’s String Quartet No. 3.
Shostakovich’s Tenth Quartet, composed in 1964, reflects survival and personal struggle amid the oppressive political climate of the Soviet Union. Often described as one of his most intimate and autobiographical quartets, it weaves complex emotions of defiance, sorrow, and hope into a dense musical tapestry. The Eleventh Quartet, subtitled “The Year 1905,” evokes a dark and turbulent chapter in Russian history. Its haunting movements narrate the collective anguish and unrest of revolution, casting a somber, almost spectral atmosphere that lingers long after the final note.
