What if old music still has the power to shock us?
Axiom Quartet opens Eternally Modern with a program that hears the past as something vivid, strange, and alive. Gesualdo’s madrigals, written more than four centuries ago, still sound dangerous in their chromatic intensity. Haydn, too often treated as polite and well-behaved, emerges here as a master of surprise, wit, and structural mischief. Beethoven’s Op. 127 then opens the door to his late quartets, a world of wonder, spaciousness, and inward transformation.
This first concert asks us to listen again to music we think we know, and to hear how the old can become startlingly new. The evening includes brief verbal context from the quartet, complimentary wine, and a 15-minute intermission. Business casual attire is suggested. The full concert experience will last approximately 90 minutes.
